This is a map illustration of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano north of Tongatapu. The volcanic island that Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai created once rose 1300 meters above the sea. This big and destructive volcano was probably one of the most active volcanoes ever since it began to erupt in 1826. The new volcanic island became the home of many exotic animals and plants, but because the island rose so suddenly, it wasn't able to sustain its land life (it couldn't support soil). Most of its native plant and animal inhabitants have since died off.
